Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger: Episode 47 Reactions

The closing story arc for several entries in the Super Sentai series tend to follow the same framework. The evil empire finally has a plan that comes together, and the heroes are up against the wall. Everything looks like it’s going to fall apart. But then, either through a secret plan, luck, or a deus ex machina, the situation is reversed and the Super Sentai Team mounts a counter-attack.

This reversal of fortune is a highly anticipated pay off for fans of the series, who for forty-plus episodes have watched the heroes develop their skills and test their willpower through a long series of battles against their adversaries. And this is where we get with episode 47 of Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger.

The Boonboomger discussing how to handle the Hashiriyans’' proposal in episode 47

Mira’s initial reaction is filled with anger and frustration. She wants nothing to do with the person who took down Bundorio. In the background, the rest of the team discusses how shrew the Hashiriyans’ plan is. The marriage will present a facade of peace to the people of Earth, but behind the scenes it’s a simple way to keep the Boonboomger in check, unable to stop the invaders’ through plans for coming to fruition.

As she listens in on the discussion being had by the team, Mira makes up her mind. She then declares that she will go through with the wedding, to the surprise of everyone. She then addresses Taiya, letting him know that this is how she intends to take over the wheel. He quietly acknowledges her as the screen fades to black, with the viewer being left to wonder what this really means.

Meanwhile, the corrupt Division Director of the International Space Agency (ISA), Eiichiro Tokoyari, informs Spindo of Bun Pink’s acceptable of their proposal. They are pleased by this outcome and behind preparations for the next phase of their plan, which includes the arrival of several Yarucars.

Across town, the Sanseaters are running away from a group of Nejiretta who are hunting them down for betraying their forces. They are saved at the last minute by Bun Black, who then takes them to a safer spot under a bridge, where he reveals that a group of children had alerted him to their predicament. After discussing their recent misfortunes and betrayals by their leaders, the Sanseaters and Bun Black form strike up an unlikely friendship.

This leads them to team up and fend off another group of Nejiretta that tracked them down. Fighting with their backs to each other to protect the group of kids, their bond strengths and Decotrade remarks that he could get used to this.

As this is happening, Byun Diesel and Sakito are fighting numerous Boonboom Killer Robos as Senji looks on from his uncle Raita’s office. Like the kids who helped and cheered for the Sanseaters and Bun Black, he is rooting for them to win against the Earth-built robots. This makes his uncle look at him, almost as is he is doubting his alliance with the ISA and the Hashiriyans.

This all leads to and culminates with the wedding between Mira and Spindo. As the ceremony is about to come to conclude, the Boonboomger make their move and reveal that they’ve been playing a long game against the ISA, Lightning Tech, and the Hashiriyans. They have manage to flip the tables on all of them and have put themselves in a position to kickstart their counter-attack.

The episode ends on an exciting note as the Boonboomger transform in front of Spindo and Grantu, and declare that this is the Final Lap.

The Boonboomger’s turning the table on the the ISA, Lightning Tech, and the Hashiriyans

This episode made for an exciting setup for the series finale, and the story had some clever callbacks to the series first episode. In that episode, Taiya is introduced during a wedding ceremony, from which he extracts the bride, Mira. This mirrors how he rescues her from Spindo in this episode.

Episode one’s focus was on Mira taking the wheel for herself and being in charge of her life, which she also does in this episode. In many ways, episode 47 of Boonboomger, serves as the bookend to the story.

The subplot of kids being the only ones to see through what was happening and cheering for the Boonboomger’s to win was a great way to reaffirm one of the Super Sentai series primary missions. To deliver stories of brave heroes, fighting for justice, that kids can root for. This goes back to the very beginning of the long-running series and was a great way to contrast the adults’ motivation against those of the kids and us as viewers.
